EPCTDL and EPCPL

Royal Palm Dancesport Winter Frolic is just days away and it’s time for Exhaustive Pre-Comp To-Do List and Exhaustive Pre-Comp Packing List. Having done this a fair few times we almost don’t need lists anymore, yet we do still manage to arrive at a comp and realize we’ve forgotten something! So here goes:

To do:

  • Buy tights & eyelashes
  • Do nails
  • Pack my stuff
  • Pack Daniel’s stuff
  • Polish Daniel’s shoes
  • Print heat lists
  • Get hotel reservation
  • Confirm pet-sitter

To pack:

  • 2 dresses, 2 shoes, 2 tights
  • Practice clothes (this is what I always forget!)
  • Dress & shoes for Friday night social
  • Snacks
  • Makeup & jewelry
  • Shirts, vest, tie, pants, socks for Daniel
  • Friday night clothes for D.
  • USA Dance jackets
  • Tylenol, Advil, KT Tape, & Band-Aids

This is going to be interesting as I’ll be at work till about 6 p.m. Thursday and we will leave no later than 7 a.m. Friday. Wish us luck for the prep as well as for the competition–and stay tuned for updates! Our Twitter is usually pretty quiet but I try to live-tweet a bit from comps, so it’s a good time to follow @DLDancers!

What we’re up to this week

(you can see I’m trying to make “What we’re up to this week” a Regular Feature of this here Internet Website.)

Our monthly dance is tomorrow! Don’t forget the time change: 8:30 to 11:00. Come and give us a good send-off to our competition next weekend. Sunday we have a lesson; one last chance to polish up with our instructor and then we’ll get some practice in next week.

For those of you who played along with “Pick My Dress” on Facebook, we are now in the “on tenterhooks awaiting its arrival” phase. Tune in after the competition for pics and video to see what the final choice was.

Finally, if you haven’t already seen this video, I recommend watching it immediately. It’s not recent, but BOY is it good.

What we’re up to this week

The Royal Palm Dancesport Winter Frolic is getting closer and we are getting ready! Had a great lesson on Sunday drilling waltz technique with an emphasis on rotation. I learned that the root word of “waltz” is a word that means “revolve,” so dancers should never forget that a good-looking waltz relies on rotation. It doesn’t have to be dizzying–just enough motion and changes of direction to keep the momentum consistent. We still need to work on this emphasis but it’s already adding a lot of dynamism and energy to our dancing.

Last weekend was USA Dance Greater Macon’s monthly social, which was lots of fun as usual. Paula East did a great job with the music after our usual DJ, Chester Gibbs, had to drop out at the last minute due to an emergency. Thanks, Paula!

Our next dance (our first of 2016!) is coming right up on the 22nd. Mark your calendars and we hope to see you there. Stay tuned to this website for our February group class schedule and don’t forget we are available for private lessons too.

What we’re up to this week

Happy New Year, dancers and soon-to-be dancers! (see what I did there?) We are counting the days to the Royal Palm Dancesport Winter Frolic. Later this month we’ll be taking a couple of private lessons to brush everything up before we hit the competition floor. Our next group class is also starting soon–Wednesdays at 8 p.m. at Madison Studio beginning January 6. Please email me (laura at dldancers dot com) ASAP if you plan to participate.

Neil deGrasse Tyson says January 1 is “astronomically insignificant” but I still love the prospect of new beginnings and the anticipation of improvement that comes with starting a new year. Daniel and I are both motivated to work on our dancing this year, especially since he has already scoped out a competition in Montréal in 2017 for us to attend in celebration of his 60th birthday. In 2015 we started the process of getting back into competitive dance. 2016 will be the year that we really rededicate ourselves to becoming better dancers and sharing our love of dance with those around us. Let’s get started!
