Rumba with Kecky and Teeb

Yesterday afternoon we met up with our friends Kelly & Steve (known to Kelly’s toddler niece as Kecky and Teeb) to help them work on their wedding dance. They are getting married at the beginning of May. Kelly started ballroom at the same time I did, but didn’t stick with it seriously for want of a steady partner. Maybe this wedding dance will be the gateway drug that turns the newlyweds into dedicated dancers!

They already had a song picked out and we agreed that they should dance a rumba.  They are quick studies and worked up a routine in less than an hour.  I can’t wait to see them dance it at their wedding.

Surprisingly, they had not had enough dancing in the afternoon and agreed to have dinner with us and then go to the USA Dance chapter’s monthly dance in the evening.  Paula taught some waltz basics at the lesson before the dance, which was very well attended.  Everyone was decked out in their Valentine’s Day red.  Daniel got to be one of several “dance hosts”: women paid $1 for a ticket to dance with a dance host, with the money going to our chapter.  He collected ten tickets!  He also took a bunch of videos during the evening, including the debut of a new line dance/mixer that Dianne taught us.  I’ll post that to our YouTube channel as soon as Daniel figures out how to get the videos off his camera–it’s brand new.

SNDP: Special Edition

Daniel and I will be at the High Point Classic Dancesport Championships this weekend, so we are leaving the Sunday Night Dance Party in the capable hands of Joyce Newman (local tanguera and owner of many a fabulous shoe) and John Herren (USA Dance Greater Macon Chapter 6059 president).  The dance will proceed as usual; you just won’t be seeing our smiling faces.  So come on out Sunday, Oct. 25, from 6:30 to 9:00.  Dress casually; bring $5 and your song requests.  Behave nicely while we’re gone.  Don’t make me come over there!

Dance trifecta

Around here, the dance scene always slows down over the summer. A lot of people are traveling, so not many events are scheduled. As the summer winds down (our schools start early, so for all intents & purposes the summer is now over), the dance events wind up. On Friday we attended the monthly dance at the Howard hosted by John Herren et al.; tonight is our Sunday Night Dance Party, also at the Howard.

Last night we went to Warner Robins for Dance Houston County‘s monthly social.  They have recently moved their monthly dances to an excellent new venue, the Warner Robins Conference Center.  The facility offers nice chairs, adequate air conditioning, and most importantly, a good floor!  The Houston County chapter offered free admission to last night’s dance to anyone who had bought a ticket to the Dancing for our Heroes event that is coming up on August 29.  Their chapter president, Kristin Streilin, said that hardly anyone had paid to get in, so it sounds like ticket sales are going well.

But if you don’t already have a ticket to Dancing for our Heroes, I know that some are still available.  The event is a fundraiser for the Hearts to Heroes chapter of the Wounded Warrior Project and will be held at the Museum of Aviation’s “Century of Flight” hangar.  Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door and are available from board members of Dance Houston County and USA Dance Greater Macon.

Poll: Fall Workshop Ideas

At last night’s dance we floated the idea of offering a workshop in conjunction with one of our upcoming dances, probably in early fall.  We want to get some feedback about what people are interested in.  We are considering offering 2 or 3 one-hour workshop sessions in the afternoon, followed by a dinner break, and then our dance in the evening. Everyone could sign up for the session(s) they want to attend.

To give us some specific feedback, could you please take a minute to answer the following poll?  The link will take you to the poll Web site. Thank you!

Sunday Night Dance Parties, recent and future

Thanks to everyone who braved the heat in order to attend, last night was another successful Sunday Night Dance Party.  We heard and appreciated some very kind compliments about our musical selections and discussed some great ideas for future Sunday night events.  Here are some pictures from last night:

SNDP: “Sweating is good for you” edition

Summer has begun and it’s already turning out to be a hot one.  We can’t promise that you’ll feel cooler if you come to this month’s Sunday Night Dance Party–except in the sense that dancing is a very cool thing to do.  Join us from 6:30 to 9:30 this Sunday, June 28 at the Howard Community Club.  Dress casually (wear shorts! Really!); bring $5 for admission and your song requests.  Daniel has been downloading some great new music that he thinks everyone will really enjoy.

See you there!

You can’t keep a good man down

Big WOOHOO! for Frank Hill’s appearance at the Howard Community Club last night with his partner Jamie Wyatt.  He is looking great, dancing great, and rocking the bald-headed look.  Everyone was very excited to see him and we are glad he is doing so well.  If you haven’t done so yet, please check out his CarePages site for frequent updates on his progress.  Here are some pictures of Frank with us and with Jamie.  Click the thumbnails to see a larger version.

Hello, Gary & Kelly!

I am late in posting this but I wanted to give a shout out to 2 new dancers, Gary & Kelly, whom we met at USA Dance 6059’s monthly social this past Saturday.  About 6 of us joined together to teach them some steps that night–I hope their heads weren’t spinning too much by the time they left.

This kind of welcome is my first and fondest memory of coming to a USA Dance event.  I was by myself and didn’t know anything, but everyone greeted me, helped me, taught me steps, and asked me to dance even though I was new and clueless.  The dancing itself is great, of course, but I also think dancers are some of the nicest people around.  We are always happy to welcome newcomers.

The turnout Saturday night was excellent and a good time was had by all.  Daniel even defied his doctor’s orders and danced a half-dozen or so dances.  He is not supposed to be dancing till after his knee pain is diagnosed and treated, but really, where’s the fun in that?

SNDP: Staycation Edition

If, like me, you avoid holiday travel, you are probably planning to celebrate Memorial Day–the traditional beginning of summer–by staying home.  For ourselves and everyone else who isn’t traveling, we are hosting this month’s Sunday Night Dance Party on May 24, the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, at the Howard Community Club.  We’ll start at 6:30 and dance till 9:30.  As usual, admission is $5 and soft drinks are available for a donation.  Dress casually and bring your song requests–DJ Daniel is always happy to play them. Hope to see you there!
