What we’re up to this week

Hello dancers! Just updated the Dance Events page with the dates for our casual/practice dance in 2016.

AND we are counting the days to our next competition: the Royal Palm Dancesport Winter Frolic in Florida. We had so much fun at this comp last year and we are excited to dance there again!

Finally, we are scheduling our 2016 group classes and will put out an email soon with dates and times for January.

What we’re up to this week

Oh MAN, October is flying by. It’s already been 2 weeks since we got back from the Carolina Fall Classic (I’m about to update our Competitive Highlights page; stand by) and a week since I got to take a workshop and private lesson with a new instructor for us, James. Can’t wait to work with him again tomorrow. We’re also rehearsing with Denise Froemeke for the Kay Center’s Dancing for the Stars event in November. She and Daniel have come up with a really cute routine and I have the perfect dress for her to wear! Oh–AND–we are teaching for Mercer University’s ballroom club this coming Monday as well. Busy Busy Dancers and we love it!

Okay–going to post this update now and get some other photos, videos, and posts up later today and tomorrow. Stay tuned and check back soon. Thanks!

What we’re up to this week

The schedule for next weekend’s Carolina Fall Classic was posted last night and I have printed out our heat lists. SO EXCITED. It’s the first time in a few years that we’ve been able to attend this competition. It has gone from fairly humble beginnings to a record number of entries this year largely through the good offices of the organizers, Wayne and Marie Crowder (who also founded the awesome Triangle Open where we got to dance several years ago–college students now run that comp themselves, which gladdens this dancing professor’s heart!). We are going to be dancing a lot next weekend, especially if we make it into some semi-finals and finals. Cross your fingers for us and watch @dldancers on Twitter for updates. Special thanks to USA Dance Greater Macon Chapter 6059 for their generous support of our entries and hotel for this competition.

We’ve also been practicing with the lovely Denise Froemke for the Kay Community Service Center’s “Dancing for the Stars” event in Fort Valley on November 15. Daniel will be Denise’s partner for this event and they are getting ready to dance a cha-cha that you will not want to miss! Lots of the performers are contemporary/urban style ballroom dancers–if you don’t know this style of dance, it is definitely worth checking out. You could be seeing the next evolution of ballroom!

Finally, we are hosting our 4th Friday dance tonight and expecting a great turnout. Daniel has been scoping out new music again. Have you ever danced a cha-cha to a song in Turkish? Tonight, you will get your chance. Join us at the Howard Community Club at 8 p.m. for just $5 per person.

See you on the dance floor!

What we’re up to lately

We’ll be attending the Summer’s Night Picnic & Dance at Macon City Auditorium tomorrow night. This event is a fundraiser for Pine Pointe Hospice and thus an heir (so to speak) to the Stars Over Macon Ball for which USA Dance Greater Macon was a co-sponsor. I’ve heard that the event is sold out, but they are still advertising, so tickets may still be available.

On August 30 we will be performing at the Tubman African-American Museum’s International Taste of Soul event. The only question here is whether we’ll be able to stop eating long enough to dance! Seriously though, this will be our first time performing at the Tubman so we are very excited and honored.

Next month (September 12) we’ll be dancing an exhibition at USA Dance Greater Macon’s monthly dance in honor of National Ballroom Month. We are choreographing a new rumba routine for the occasion. This is the music we are using–we love it!

We are also back to teaching group classes on Tuesday nights as well as private lessons. Tuesday night group class will continue in September and a silver level class may be added on Thursdays at 8 p.m. Would you like a silver level class? Leave a comment and let us know!

Opportunity for Dance & Stardom

Looking for a chance to show off your swing moves, help promote Macon tourism, and become a video star? The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame brings us this news: On Friday, January 24 the Macon-Bibb Convention and Visitors Bureau is shooting a new video for use in their Visitors’ Center and looking for dancers to appear in it. It will be titled “What’s Shakin’ in Macon” and the dance scene will be a large group dance to Otis Redding’s “Shake,” this song rightchea:

They will be shooting at 5:00 p.m. in Cherry Street Plaza, and anyone can show up and participate. The CVB is offering refreshments and “Macon gifts” to everyone who joins in. You can call 478-743-1074 or email tbush@visitmacon.org with questions. We will definitely be there . . . will you?

Back to School, 2013 edition

Je dois commencer par dire un bonjour à nos amis français qui ont reçu une carte de visite de moi ou de Daniel pendant notre séjour à Paris. Merci de visiter notre site web!

After a big summer–lots of work, a little dancing, and a big trip to Paris–we are looking forward to getting back to dance in the next few weeks. We will be continuing our group classes at Madison Studio of Dance Education in Macon on Sunday afternoons starting September 8. Please contact us ASAP if you’d like to join the class! Meanwhile we are working with some new wedding couples and have been asked to perform at a wedding reception for one of Daniel’s co-workers. Bible Belt Burlesque celebrated their first birthday the day we came back from Paris so we missed dancing in that show, but hopefully we’ll be invited for the next one.

Next weekend we’ll be attending the Summer’s Night Picnic and Dance benefiting Pine Pointe Hospice. USA Dance Greater Macon has been a long-time supporter of Pine Pointe via the Stars Over Macon Ball. It’s not too late to get a ticket and join the party.

More updates coming soon as this school year/dance year gets rolling. Thanks for all your support!

Instrument Petting Zoo!

Daniel and I had to stay busy between meeting our Dancing Stars partners and finding out the dances we’d been assigned, so last Sunday we spent the afternoon at the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences’ “Instrument Petting Zoo” event.  The event is an annual collaboration between the Museum and the Mercer/Macon Youth Orchestra and it’s designed to introduce young children (preschool/early elementary) to classical music and musical instruments.  This year, small ensembles from the orchestra played some dance selections (a pair of “Renaissance dances,” a waltz, a sarabande, a tango, and a samba) and the manager wanted to showcase some dancing along with the music.  She contacted Ms. Madison who put Daniel and me on the case as well as choreographing a number herself.  We rallied the troops from our group class and from Got Dance? Move It! so there was plenty of participation.

The Madison Studio’s junior performance ensemble performed beautifully to the “Renaissance Dances.”  Daniel and I danced the waltz; then Daniel partnered our student Megan and two of the GDMI dancers joined them for the tango.  Another GDMI member choreographed a gorgeous contemporary piece for the sarabande, and all of us closed out the program with some audience participation to the samba.  We did 3 performances over the course of the afternoon with an almost-full house for every one.  Got effusive compliments from the orchestra manager (Hi Connie!  Thanks!), a few museum higher-ups, and some audience members.  Most of all we were incredibly proud of the GDMI dancers.  They are so game and energetic and up for anything.  We salute them!

Dueling Dancing Stars

Big news from DLDancers HQ: Daniel and I found out on Friday that we have been chosen as “pros” for the Alzheimer’s Association “Dancing Stars of Central Georgia” event.  Just like on Dancing with the Stars we will each be paired with a local “star” to prepare a dance routine that will be performed at the event on May 12 at the Macon City Auditorium.  Since we will each have our own star, we will be competing against each other.  Let the games begin!  According to the information we got from the Alzheimer’s Association, there will be 2 winning couples: the Judges’ Choice (decided on the night of the event, of course) and the People’s Choice (which is the pair that raises the most money).  Can DLDancers take home ALL the trophies?

We are so excited and honored to have been chosen and now are waiting impatiently to find out the identities of our stars.  I have an idea of who mine might be but it’s a long shot.  No matter what, we can’t wait to dive in and get involved with this excellent event.  The Alzheimer’s Association has put on these events in other parts of the state (and nationally, I think) and they are the real pros.  They have already organized a web site (http://dancingstarsofcentralgeorgia2012.kintera.org), a cast party for March 1, plans to video our rehearsals, local TV appearances, and some other good stuff that we’re not even allowed to talk about yet.  And all of this for an excellent cause.  The statistics on Alzheimer’s disease are alarming; it is such a difficult and heartbreaking disease for sufferers and caregivers.  In every possible way we are thrilled to be involved with such a prominent and well-run humanitarian event.

Stay tuned for lots of updates including: Who are our stars? What are we dancing? What music have we chosen? How can you donate? How can you get tickets to the event? WHO WILL WIN???
